Afrobeats star Davido has explained why he used his performance at the FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to draw publicity to the recent a.bduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State

Speaking during an interview with BBC News Africa, the singer said he believes public figures have a responsibility to speak up about the country’s security challenges instead of remaining silent to protect Nigeria’s image.

Davido stressed that the safety of innocent children should take priority over concerns about the nation’s reputation, adding that international platforms can be used to amplify issues affecting Nigerians.

He said:

“A lot of people don’t really want to talk about what goes on in Nigeria simply because they want to protect the image, but there’s no image to protect if the little kids are being K!dnapped.

“As much as i was happy to do the World Cup, We also have to understand that there are things going on, back home in our country which we have the power to let the world know through our own means.”
