Portable claims industry rivalry blocking new artists

Nigerian singer Portable has sparked fresh conversation in the music industry after commenting on the dynamics between older and current generations of Afrobeats artists.

In a recent remark, he reflected on how pioneers such as D’banj, Timaya, Don Jazzy, and Flavour helped create opportunities that allowed the rise of today’s biggest stars, including Wizkid, Davido, and Olamide.

However, Portable suggested that the current top figures in the industry may not be creating enough space for newer talents to break through. He specifically mentioned leading acts like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, and Olamide in his statement.

He said:
“The older generation like D’banj, Timaya, Don Jazzy, and Flavour paved the way for Wizkid, Davido, and Olamide to rise. But today, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Olamide don’t want people like us to surpass them.”

The comment has since drawn attention online, with fans and observers debating whether the music industry currently provides enough opportunities for emerging artists to compete with established stars

Portable, known for his outspoken personality and viral remarks, continues to position himself as part of the new wave of artists pushing for recognition in Nigeria’s fast-evolving music scene.
