Nigerian-born WWE performer Oba Femi has spoken about how his Yoruba upbringing has played a major role in shaping his journey to success in professional wrestling
The two-time NXT Champion, whose real name is Isaac Odugbesan, shared in a recent interview that growing up in a Yoruba household helped build the confidence, discipline, and expressive personality that now define his in-ring character.
He pointed to cultural values such as “faaji” described as a love for enjoyment and celebration alongside confidence, respect, and strong self-expression as key influences that prepared him for the global stage.
According to Femi, these traits naturally align with professional wrestling, where charisma, storytelling, and presence are just as important as physical strength.
Born in Lagos, the wrestler also highlighted his earlier background in athletics, particularly shot put, noting that it helped develop the discipline and power that support his wrestling career today.
Femi recently gained further attention after a major WrestleMania victory in which he reportedly defeated Brock Lesnar, a win that boosted his rising status within WWE.
Now performing under the persona “The Ruler,” he explained that he intentionally brings elements of his heritage into his character, blending cultural pride with entertainment on a global stage.
As his profile continues to grow in WWE, Femi’s journey is increasingly being seen as an example of how African cultural identity can influence and shine within international sports entertainment.
