Rapper, Jude ‘MI’ Abaga has shared a memorable moment from his early career, recalling how he was literally chased off the red carpet at the 2008 Headies Awards to make room for veteran actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s photo session.
Speaking on the Vbyz TV Cartel, MI Abaga reflected on a time when his hard work went largely unnoticed. Despite being nominated for ‘Best Rap Single,’ he said many people at the event didn’t recognize him, urging him to move aside to accommodate Omotola’s presence.
The 44-year-old rapper recalled, “I had been grinding for years and no one seemed to notice. In February 2008, I was announced as the winner for ‘Best Rap Single,’ and that moment changed everything for me. I was walking into the crowd with my manager, and as Omotola arrived with her security, the red carpet officials told us, ‘Come on, get out of here.’ We kept getting moved from spot to spot as she posed for pictures.”
He added that just two hours later, holding his award, the perception of him shifted instantly. “That gold plaque from Ayo Animashaun made everyone see that MI was in the game. After that, it was all about hits like ‘Safe,’ ‘Talk About It,’ and ‘Incredible Music.’”
