The Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Sunday
Nigeria’s loss also means the defending champions have missed out on an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Cameroon secured the surprise victory in Casablanca through 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou, who broke the deadlock after 19 minutes with a powerful free-kick that flew beyond the reach of Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and settled in the corner of the net.
The goal was Nyadjou’s first of the tournament and proved enough to send Cameroon into the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday. The victory also secured Cameroon a place at next year’s World Cup.
Nigeria, the record 10-time WAFCON champions, pushed hard for an equaliser as the game entered its final stages, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina repeatedly stood in their way with a series of impressive saves.
The Falcons came closest to restoring parity deep into stoppage time when Esther Okoronkwo beat Bihina to the ball, but her effort rolled narrowly wide of the far post.
