Disgraced R&B star R Kelly has been hospitalized following an apparent drug overdose while serving his prison sentence.
According to his legal team, the singer was placed in solitary confinement on June 10 and later administered anxiety medication by jail staff on June 12. The medication allegedly led to severe side effects.
Kelly reportedly felt faint, complained of dizziness, and said he was seeing black spots before collapsing. He was rushed to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, where he is currently receiving treatment. His lawyers claim the incident was caused by a “dangerous amount” of medication given to him while in confinement.
The Bureau of Prisons has declined to comment, citing ongoing legal proceedings.
Kelly, who rose to fame with hits like I Believe I Can Fly, is serving a 30-year sentence following his 2021 conviction on multiple counts, including sex trafficking and racketeering. He has recently faced new allegations, including claims of a murder-for-hire plot from behind bars, and is reportedly seeking a presidential pardon.
