Instagram has wiped millions of followers from hundreds of thousands of accounts, leaving users in a state of shock. While Meta has yet to release a formal statement, the “Great Purge of 2026” is already trending across social platforms as users woke up to decimated follower counts
The sudden drop, which occurred in a swift overnight wave, is part of Instagram’s aggressive new effort to scrub the platform of spam, inactive accounts, and “non-organic” followers.
This includes accounts purchased through third-party services or those flagged as automated bots.
