2026 World Cup: FIFA sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo

The body governing football in the world, FIFA, has sanctioned both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association following disciplinary incidents recorded during a 2026 World Cup qualifying fixture between the two countries.

The decision was announced in FIFA’s latest disciplinary overview for World Cup qualifying matches, the two football bodies were found guilty of separate infractions during the encounter played on 16 November 2025.

Nigeria (NFF) sanction

FIFA fined the Nigerian federation 1,000 Swiss francs after supporters were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch, which constitutes a breach of match order and security regulations under the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

DR Congo FA sanction

The Congolese federation received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after fans were found to have used laser pointers and electronic devices during the match, an offence also covered under FIFA’s disciplinary rules regarding spectator behaviour.

What happened?

The sanctions relate to the tense playoff clash between Nigeria and DR Congo, which the Congolese side eventually won on penalties (4–3). The governing body also noted that the summary of sanctions released publicly is mainly intended to inform the media, while the official legal decisions are communicated directly to the concerned federations.

FIFA fined the Nigerian federation after supporters threw objects onto the pitch during the tense playoff encounter. This behavior violated FIFA’s disciplinary regulations regarding stadium safety and fan conduct.

The DR Congo federation received a heavier fine because fans were reported to have used laser pointers and other electronic devices aimed at players during the match, which is also prohibited under FIFA rules.

After the defeat, Nigeria also submitted a separate petition to FIFA questioning the eligibility of some Congolese players, a case that has been under review.

However, FIFA is yet to announce a final decision on the petition submitted by the NFF over the eligibility of the Congolese players.
