Music executive Don Jazzy has shared a thought-provoking perspective on why many modern marriages seem less enduring than those of previous generations
Reflecting on a past conversation about the topic, he suggested that wedding traditions particularly cakes might symbolize a deeper shift in commitment.
“We were talking the other day about why marriages nowadays don’t last as much as our parents’. Then I thought maybe this is the reason,” he said.
He went on to describe how, in the past, couples often had traditional fruitcakes at their weddings. These cakes were carefully prepared, served to guests, and preserved for months sometimes up to a year before being eaten again on the couple’s first anniversary.
“Back in the day, when our parents got married, they used to make those fruit cakes. The cake shops would design them, serve some to guests, and leave the rest for about one year. Then they would eat the remaining cake on their one-year anniversary,” he explained.
According to him, the longevity of those cakes was no coincidence. Ingredients like alcohol helped preserve them, allowing them to last far longer than modern alternatives.
“Those cakes lasted long because they used things like alc©h®l to preserve them,” he added.
Comparing this to today’s trends, he noted that many couples now opt for buttercream or ice cream cakes, which are not designed to last.
“But now, people use butter ice cream cakes and things like that, and they don’t last. They can’t stay for one year,” he said.
He also pointed out the growing trend of elaborate decorative cakes that are not entirely edible.
“To make it w©r§e, some people don’t even make proper cakes anymore. They just design a big cake, but only a small part is actual cake that can be cut and shared. The rest is just a big plastic design,” he remarked.
Wrapping up his thoughts on a light note, Don Jazzy suggested that perhaps the fading tradition of preserving wedding cake could reflect a broader shift in how relationships are nurtured.
“So maybe that’s why marriages are not working now because people don’t keep that cake for one year and eat it in ‘their one year anniversary.
