When you hear the name Davido today, it feels like a carefully built brand that has traveled across the world. But the story behind it is actually very simple and very personal, going all the way back to his childhood at home.
Davido recently spoke about how the name people now know him by wasn’t something planned for music or fame. It actually came from everyday moments with his father when he was much younger. According to him, he was quite a stubborn child, and that often made it hard for his dad to get his attention in a normal way.
Instead of repeatedly calling him in a regular tone, his father found a more expressive way to reach him when he misbehaved or needed to be called in.
“My dad gave me the name Davido. I was very stubborn as a kid, so whenever he wanted to call me, he’d shout ‘David-o! Davido-o!’ That’s how the name stuck,”.
Over time, what started as a simple way of calling out to him at home slowly turned into something permanent. The playful but firm way his father pronounced it became a nickname that stayed with him as he grew up.
Eventually, that same name followed him into his music career. As he stepped into the spotlight and began building his identity as an artist, the name “Davido” was already familiar, personal, and meaningful to him.
Today, it’s known globally, but its origin remains tied to those early family moments and a father’s way of dealing with a spirited child.
