Crystal Palace have been dropped from the UEFA Europa League to the UEFA Europa Conference League for the 2025/26 season due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations.
The Eagles had secured a Europa League spot after a historic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City at Wembley, sealed by a decisive goal from Eberechi Eze.
However, the club’s demotion stems from a conflict of interest involving their co-owner, John Textor, who also holds a significant stake in French club Olympique Lyonnais. Lyon, who were at risk of relegation to Ligue 2 and exclusion from Europe due to financial concerns, successfully appealed to remain in Ligue 1 and regain their Europa League spot.
UEFA’s ruling allowed Lyon to keep their place in the Europa League, forcing Palace down to the third-tier Conference League as a result.
In an official statement, UEFA said it had decided to:
“Accept Olympique Lyonnais’ admission to the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League; and… to reject Crystal Palace’s admission to the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League and to accept Crystal Palace’s admission to the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League.”
Crystal Palace still have the option to appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
