The Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday descended into disorder as the match was halted for close to 20 minutes near the end of regulation time following heated protests from Senegal over a late penalty awarded to Morocco
Tensions flared at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium after the decision, with a large number of Senegal players leaving the pitch in anger. In the stands, furious supporters threw objects and attempted to move toward the field as Morocco prepared to take what could have been the winning kick.
Brahim Diaz eventually stepped up to take the penalty deep into stoppage time, specifically in the 24th minute of added time. However, his chipped effort was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, ensuring the match remained goalless and was forced into extra time.
The spot kick was awarded after a prolonged VAR review by the Congolese referee, who judged that Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf had committed a foul on Diaz in the box.
Diaz led the appeals for the decision, repeatedly demanding a penalty, with members of the Moroccan bench also joining the protest.
Security personnel and stewards quickly intervened, forming a barrier in front of a small group of Senegal supporters at the opposite end of the stadium. Calm was eventually restored, allowing the match to resume and proceed into extra time.
