2026 WCQ Play-Off: Ex-Super Eagles Star Ifeanyi Udeze explains why he will be supporting DR Congo to qualify for World Cup after they beat Nigeria

Former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze has revealed he will be supporting Democratic Republic of the Congo to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of Jamaica.

DR Congo are just one win away from securing their first World Cup appearance since their debut at the 1974 tournament in West Germany.

To book their place, the Leopards must defeat Jamaica in Tuesday’s play-off final in Mexico.

The Congolese side reached this stage after eliminating Nigeria’s Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time in the African play-offs held in Morocco in November 2025.

Now, they stand on the brink of making only their second appearance at the World Cup.

Explaining his support, Udeze said on Brila FM: “I am supporting DR Congo to be at the World Cup because I want the Super Eagles players to understand what it means to qualify for a major tournament like the World Cup—especially when the team that knocked you out goes on to qualify.

“So, I’m supporting DR Congo and wishing them all the best.”

A victory for DR Congo would see Africa represented by 10 teams at the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Other African teams already qualified include Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Cape Verde, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
