Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner as Spain defeated Belgium 2-1 on Friday to secure a place in the World Cup semifinals
The midfielder struck in the 88th minute, reacting quickest after Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold onto a shot.
It marked Merino’s second successive match-winning goal in the knockout stage after his late strike against Portugal in the Round of 16.
Spain took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz, but Belgium responded soon after with an equaliser from Charles De Ketelaere, ending Spain’s clean-sheet run at the tournament.
The victory sends Spain into the semifinals, where they will face France on Tuesday for a place in the World Cup final.
