Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has stirred conversation online after speaking against what he described as society’s unfair treatment of women involved in intimacy-related scandals.
The respected actor questioned why men often escape criticism while women involved in the same situation are subjected to intense backlash and lasting judgment.
According to him, society appears more willing to excuse men, while women are left to bear the shame alone.
“Why is it that when a man and a woman both make the same mistake or fall into a scandal involving intimacy, society often lets the man walk away untouched or with little to no consequence, while the woman carries the heavier burden and is judged more harshly?”.
The actor’s remarks have since triggered widespread reactions, with many social media users agreeing that women frequently face harsher public scrutiny than men in similar situations. Others argued that both parties involved should be held to the same standard without bias or selective condemnation.
Chiwetalu Agu’s statement adds to ongoing conversations about gender expectations, accountability, and the way society responds differently to controversies involving men and women.
