Media personality Toke Makinwa has ignited conversations online after explaining why she no longer pays tithes to churches, arguing that many ministries are already financially well-established
She shared her views during an interview on WithChude, where she discussed how her approach to giving has evolved over time. According to her, several churches she is familiar with appear financially buoyant, frequently launching new building projects funded by members.
Every church is building. Every Sunday, there’s a building fund envelope. You guys have so much money and it’s not taxed. It’s a business, if we are going to be real. Because if that pastor dies today, either his wife or his child becomes the next pastor,” she said.
While stating that she no longer pays tithes, Makinwa made it clear that she still contributes offerings and supports specific church initiatives when she feels led to do so.
The broadcaster added that she now prefers to redirect what would have been her tithe toward individuals in urgent need, saying she feels compelled to address “actual needs.”
According to her, this includes assisting people with rent, supporting widows, and helping to settle medical and maternity bills.
