Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will miss the remainder of the 2025/2026 season after sustaining a serious knee injury, Werder Bremen have confirmed
The Nigeria international had been managing the issue since last summer but continued playing until December, when the problem worsened, causing him to miss Bremen’s final two matches of the year. Subsequent medical assessments revealed damage to the knee cartilage.
Initially, Boniface chose to delay treatment, hoping the injury would stabilise. By December, however, the cartilage damage had advanced, making it impossible for him to continue playing. While doctors recommended immediate surgery, he sought a second opinion in Austria after the Christmas break. His appointment, originally set for January 7, was postponed by a day due to adverse weather conditions.
Following further evaluation, specialists confirmed that surgery was unavoidable and would require a lengthy recovery. Werder Bremen stated that Boniface will undergo the procedure in the coming days, ruling him out for the rest of the season. The club did not provide a precise return date but indicated that rehabilitation would extend beyond the current campaign.
This injury is a significant blow for both club and country, as Boniface will miss all remaining domestic fixtures and international duties in the near term. Focus now turns to his recovery and rehabilitation, with the goal of returning to full fitness ahead of the next season.
