Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about how the kind of record label an artiste is signed to can greatly affect their emotional wellbeing and mental health
During an appearance on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, the music star reflected on her time at Mavin Records and admitted she didn’t fully value the family-like environment there until after her exit.
Tiwa explained that while she was under the label, she always had people around her to lean on whenever social media pressure or personal struggles became overwhelming.
The singer praised Don Jazzy and the bond shared among the artistes at the label, describing it as a support system that helped her cope with difficult moments in the spotlight.
“Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it.”
However, Tiwa noted that things became very different after joining an international label, saying the same personal connection and emotional support no longer exists.
“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part.”
