Singer Dua Lipa sues Samsung for £11m for using face to sell TVs without her permission

Pop star Dua Lipa is reportedly suing Samsung for £11 million, accusing the tech giant of using her image on television packaging without permission.

According to court documents filed in the Central District of California, the singer claims her photograph was used on the packaging of Samsung’s Crystal 43-inch ultra-high-definition televisions to promote the XITE Hits music channel.

The image, which was reportedly taken backstage at a 2024 music festival, allegedly appeared on a large number of television boxes sold across the United States. Dua Lipa’s legal team argued that the unauthorised use of the image created the impression that she had endorsed the product, leading some fans to purchase the televisions because of her association with them.

Her lawyer, Christine Lepera, reportedly stated in the filing that Samsung used a copyrighted image of the singer “without authority or licence” and prominently displayed it on retail packaging. The lawsuit further claimed that the commercial success of the televisions was linked to the false impression that Dua Lipa had officially partnered with or endorsed the product.

The Grammy-winning singer is seeking at least $15 million in damages, although the final amount could reportedly increase if the case goes before a jury. According to the filing, Samsung allegedly ignored multiple legal warnings from Dua Lipa’s representatives before the lawsuit was filed.

Social media posts included in the complaint reportedly showed fans reacting to the packaging, with some saying they bought or wanted the televisions simply because the singer’s image appeared on the box. The lawsuit also stated that Dua Lipa is selective about brand partnerships and would not necessarily have agreed to work with Samsung.

The singer, whose endorsements include partnerships with Nespresso, Puma, Porsche and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, has built a reputation as one of the world’s most marketable music stars. Samsung had not publicly filed a response to the lawsuit at the time the report emerged.
