Seyi Law declares Alibaba the Father of Stand-Up comedy in Nigeria

A debate has been brewing on X about the origins of stand-up comedy in Nigeria, with some crediting Gbenga Adeboye as the pioneer.

However, comedian Seyi Law has stepped in to counter this narrative, firmly establishing Ali Baba as the father of stand-up comedy in the country.

Seyi Law’s response came after a user claimed that Gbenga Adeboye was the true father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria and possibly West Africa. But Seyi Law disagreed, arguing that Ali Baba’s impact on the industry cannot be overstated.

According to Seyi Law, Ali Baba brought stand-up comedy to the national and international stage, transcending regional boundaries and sentiments.

Seyi Law also highlighted Ali Baba’s significant contributions to the business side of comedy, stating that he taught many comedians the structure and professionalism needed to succeed in the industry. Many big-name comedians, including Seyi Law himself, have benefited from Ali Baba’s guidance and material.

To drive his point home, Seyi Law mentioned Ali Baba’s impressive feat of performing six hours of original comedy without repetition, a testament to his skill and dedication to the craft.

Seyi Law concluded that Ali Baba is rightfully known as the “king” of stand-up comedy in Nigeria, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence new generations of comedians.

He said: “On this one, you are wrong. Alibaba brought national and international appeal to standup comedy beyond regional sentiments. Alibaba would always give reference to the hard work of those before him, but the structure and the business aspects of comedy were taught by Alibaba. Many big names today rode on Alibaba’s materials. Alibaba once did 6 hours of comedy of original materials without repetition. We call him king for a reason.”
