Afrobeats star Rema, is under fire on social media over allegations that he has repeatedly used his connections to harass and detain a young interior designer, Amaka Obasi, in an ongoing payment dispute
The accusations gained attention after X user @software_artist shared a detailed thread claiming that Obasi, known online as @amaka_babyy, was deceived into visiting the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Alagbon, Lagos, for a supposed meeting — only to be arrested and forced to pay over one million naira as bail.
According to the thread, Obasi had handled multiple projects for Rema, including renovating his mother’s house in Benin, improving his personal residence, building a music studio, and upgrading a water system. Despite this, the posts alleged that Rema filed police petitions against her rather than paying the full amount owed.
The viral claims further alleged that Obasi has been arrested three times over the dispute and is currently in detention. It was also alleged that police officers instructed her to turn off her phone so Rema would believe she remained in custody.
The post read in part:
“Rema (@heisrema) is using the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain Amaka Obasi (@amaka_babyy) all because she asked for payment on the project he commissioned her to do… She is being remanded as we speak!!”
The thread also alleged that Rema’s mother submitted a petition claiming Obasi’s previous work was substandard — despite it having been accepted before she was given a new contract.
As of the time of this report, neither Rema nor the Nigeria Police Force has released an official statement regarding the allegations.
