Olise surpasses Pelé’s long-standing mark as he sets new World Cup assist record

France winger Michael Olise has set a new FIFA World Cup record after becoming the first player to register seven assists in a single tournament.

The Bayern Munich playmaker surpassed the previous record of six assists set by Brazilian football legend Pelé during the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Olise achieved the milestone during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off on Saturday, capping an impressive individual campaign despite Les Bleus finishing outside the tournament’s top three.

The 23-year-old was instrumental to France’s attacking performances throughout the competition, providing several assists for captain Kylian Mbappé and emerging as one of the standout creative players of the tournament. A product of Crystal Palace’s academy, Olise combined vision, precision and composure to help France reach the semi-finals before their defeat to eventual finalists Spain.

Although the 2026 FIFA World Cup featured an expanded 48-team format, allowing teams to play more matches than in previous editions, Olise’s achievement stands as the highest number of assists recorded by a player in a single World Cup campaign under FIFA’s official statistics.

France ended their tournament with a loss to England in the third-place play-off, but Olise’s record-breaking feat provided a notable individual highlight from the competition.
