Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has surpassed former Super Eagles strikers Obafemi Martins and Ikechukwu Uche on Nigeria’s goalscoring chart after scoring a hat-trick in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo on Sunday, September 10.
Victor Osimhen equaled Obafemi Martins’s 18 goals for Nigeria after his first-half strike and then in the second half through a penalty, he equaled Ikechukwu Uche on 19 goals.
The match ended 6-0.
Osimhen scored the first goal of the match in the 14th minute before Ademola Lookman’s goal made it two to end the first half, 2-0.
Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi scored his goal just after resumption of proceedings with an acrobatic kick to make it three, with Nigeria unleashing the floodgates afterwards.
After some nice interchangeable play, Osimhen won and converted a penalty, and then substitute Samuel Chukwueze provided an assist which completed Osimhen’s hat-trick.
Chukwueze then scored in the final minutes with an assist from Victor Boniface to wrap the victory.
The victory ensures Nigeria wins the group with 15 points.
Osimhen has surpassed former Liberia striker George Weah as the African with the highest number of goals in the Italian League top-flight history.
Last season, Victor Osimhen helped Napoli to its first league title in 33 years claiming the Serie A top-scorer Award.
Osimhen has now scored 20 goals with the senior national, drawing him closer to Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
