A thorough investigation by the UK Charity Commission has led to Naomi Campbell being prohibited from serving as a charity trustee for five years due to significant financial irregularities at her organization, Fashion for Relief.
The commission’s probe uncovered alarming evidence of poor governance and inadequate financial management within the charity.
Specifically, it was discovered that less than 9% of Fashion for Relief’s earnings were allocated towards grants and charitable causes.
Furthermore, investigators identified unauthorized expenses, including:
– Luxury hotel stays
– Security services for Campbell during an event at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival
– Spa treatments
– Room service
– Cigarette purchases
Additionally, the investigation revealed that co-trustee Bianka Hellmich received over £290,000 (approximately $388,000) in consultancy fees without approval from the commission.
As a result, Hellmich and fellow co-trustee Veronica Chou were also barred from serving as trustees for nine and four years, respectively.
To address the financial mismanagement, the Charity Commission intervened, appointing interim managers to oversee the charity’s affairs.
This led to:
– Recovery of £344,000
– Protection of £98,000 in charitable funds
– Outstanding payments totaling £345,000 made to partner charities, including Save the Children Fund and the Mayor’s Fund for London
Fashion for Relief, founded by Campbell in 2005, was officially dissolved and removed from the UK charity register in March.
According to Tim Hopkins, Charity Commission deputy director, “This inquiry has resulted in significant recoveries and protections for charitable funds. We are pleased that donations have been made to other charities previously supported by Fashion for Relief.”
The commission’s findings highlight the importance of transparency, accountability, and responsible financial management within charitable organizations.
