Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has disclosed why his side remains the sole Premier League representative in the Champions League following their quarter-final victory over Sporting CP.
The Gunners advanced to the semi-finals on Wednesday night after a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium, securing a 1-0 aggregate win over the Portuguese side. Arsenal will now face Atletico Madrid, who progressed after defeating Barcelona, in a high-stakes semi-final matchup scheduled for late April.
Arteta attributed Arsenal’s unique position as the last English team standing to their resilience in navigating a domestic calendar that often hampers European ambitions.
“This is why we are the only English team left in the competition; the league and its schedule take a toll on you, making it very challenging to achieve what we have accomplished. We are not without flaws; we must improve in certain areas, that is clear, and we recognize that, but there is merit in what these players have achieved, and they truly deserve it.”
The manager specifically highlighted the physical exhaustion of his key players. Declan Rice managed to play 94 minutes despite being “exhausted” and unwell the day before the match, while defender Piero Hincapie was also cited as pushing through extreme fatigue to contribute.
Despite the European success, the pressure remains high as Arsenal returns to Premier League action this Sunday. The Gunners are set to face Manchester City in a clash that many analysts believe will decide the destination of this season’s league title.
Arteta praised his squad’s ability to “adapt and inspire” while managing a heavy workload across multiple competitions. Arsenal is now in contention for both a historic first Champions League trophy and their first Premier League title in 22 years.
