Mariah Carey is coming clean about her first marriage to music executive Tommy Mottola. The Obsessed artist posed for photographer Jason Kim on the August cover of Cosmopolitan.
In the interview, she opened up about feeling like a ‘prisoner’ in the marriage that lasted from 1993 to 1998.
Carey was only 23 when she married Mottola, who is 20 years her senior.
She told writer Jessica Herndon: ‘You might want to picture a child bride. There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very controlled.’
She continued: ‘There was no ¬freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.’
As the article said, Mottola later admitted in his 2013 book Hitmaker: The Man and His Music that the relationship was ‘wrong and inappropriate.’
He wrote that he was ‘truly sorry for any discomfort or pain that all of my good intentions inevitably caused her’ but referred to claims that he was controlling as ‘lots of crap.’
Mimi also went on to claim she has been intimate with only five men in her 49 years and that she is really a bit of a ‘prude’ despite her bombshell image.
‘I haven’t had that many, but there has been a variety pack. I’ve only been with five people in my life, so I’m kind of a prude, honestly, compared to most others in the field,’ said the Always Be My Baby singer.
After her divorce from Mottola, she became serious with 49-year-old singer Luis Miguel from 1999 until 2001.
Carey was then wed to singer and actor Nick Cannon from 2008 until 2016, with whom she shares twins Monroe and Moroccan, both eight.
The year they split, she was briefly engaged to Australian billionaire James Packer, shortly before she started dating dancer Bryan Tanaka, with whom she’s currently in a relationship.
There have also been claims that she dated Christian Monzon (2005 – 2006), Mark Sudack (2003 – 2005), Eric Benét (2000 – 2003), Marcus Schenkenberg (1998 – 1999) and Derek Jeter (1997 – 1998).
