Joke Silva to lead judging panel at AMVCA 2026

Nollywood veteran Joke Silva has been appointed head judge for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), a role she calls a “deep responsibility” in shaping one of Africa’s most prestigious film and television ceremonies.

The announcement, made at a Lagos press conference on Thursday, comes as the AMVCA continues to grow as a cultural institution that celebrates the continent’s creative talent.

“Over the years, the AMVCA has grown far beyond an award ceremony; it has become an important cultural institution,”

Silva said, expressing excitement at the trust placed in her. She emphasized that the awards not only recognize excellence but also the artistry driving African cinema forward.

Noting this year as a defining moment for the awards, Silva noted efforts to broaden representation across the continent.

The 12th AMVCA, scheduled for May 2026 in Lagos, will feature 32 award categories, including two new Indigenous Language categories for North and Central Africa.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that the adjudication process reflects the highest standard of fairness, credibility, and professional integrity,” Silva added. She stressed that the panel’s role goes beyond popularity, aiming to honor storytelling mastery that elevates African cinema globally.

Nominees are set to be unveiled on March 29, 2026, with anticipation building among fans and industry insiders. Silva’s leadership is expected to ensure a rigorous and credible evaluation, shining a spotlight on both established and emerging talent.

Her appointment shows her influence in Nollywood, where she has long mentored actors and contributed to the industry’s growth. Stakeholders believe Silva’s guidance will set new benchmarks for integrity, diversity, and recognition of African filmmakers on both continental and global stages.
