James Milner has retired from professional football at the age of 40, ending a remarkable 24-season career in English football
The Brighton midfielder, who also won Premier League titles with Manchester City and Liverpool, finishes with a record 658 Premier League appearances — the most in history.
He spent the final three years of his career at Brighton & Hove Albion, helping the club qualify for European competition next season.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” Milner said.
He reflected on his journey from a teenage debut at Leeds United to becoming one of the league’s most enduring players, saying he could never have imagined the path his career would take.
Milner’s career also included spells at Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Swindon Town on loan before his move to Manchester City.
At City, he won multiple trophies before joining Liverpool in 2015, where he played a key role in their resurgence under Jürgen Klopp, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.
