Mr Eazi has ignited debates in the Afrobeats space after sharing his thoughts about superstar Burna Boy during a podcast appearance
In the interview, the singer made a blunt statement about his listening preferences, saying:
“I don’t like listening to Burna Boy’s songs — I’ve said it before, I don’t want my music to start sounding like his.”
While some believe it was a personal artistic boundary meant to protect Mr Eazi’s unique sound, others feel it could be taken as indirect praise for Burna Boy’s strong influence in the industry.
A section of listeners also interpreted the statement as a form of “reverse hype,” suggesting that avoiding Burna Boy’s music actually highlights how dominant and influential his sound has become in Afrobeats.
However, others disagreed, saying the remark contrasts with the collaborative and interconnected nature of the music scene, where artistes often draw inspiration from one another.
