Hull City gains promotion to EPL

Hull City have secured promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, with Oli McBurnie scoring a stoppage-time winner

The match looked set to head towards extra time before late chaos decided it. In the final moments, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn failed to deal with a cross from Yu Hirakawa, and McBurnie reacted quickest to prod the ball home from close range, sealing Hull’s return to the top flight.

The victory marks a major comeback for Hull City, who will play in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016–17 season. Their rise is even more remarkable considering they narrowly avoided relegation to League One just last year, surviving on goal difference.

Beyond the  sporting achievement, the win also guarantees a huge financial boost. Reports estimate the promotion could be worth over £200 million in revenue over the next three seasons through broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, and match-day earnings, with the figure potentially rising significantly if they manage to stay in the Premier League.

The final also came amid controversy surrounding the Championship play-offs. Southampton had initially beaten Middlesbrough in the semi-finals but were later expelled after being found guilty of illegally filming an opposition training session.

An independent commission ruled that Southampton’s manager had authorised the breach, while the English Football League confirmed multiple violations of competition rules. The decision gave Middlesbrough a second chance at promotion, but they were unable to take advantage in the final.

Despite dominating possession for long spells at Wembley, Middlesbrough struggled to create clear chances, while Hull remained dangerous on the counterattack. McBurnie had earlier come close, hitting the crossbar with a header before eventually becoming the match-winner in stoppage time.

For Hull, the result caps a remarkable turnaround season under manager Sergej Jakirovic, ending in a return to the Premier League against the odds.
