Hollywood stereotype African actors alot – Stella Damasus

Veteran Nollywood actress Stella Damasus has opened up about the challenges Nigerian actors face when trying to break into Hollywood, citing rigid stereotypes and narrow casting expectations as major obstacles.

Speaking in a chat with Arrow House, Damasus said Hollywood often operates under a limited perception of what it means to be African, expecting actors to fit a specific mold—typically a thick East African accent and very dark skin, similar to Kenyan star Lupita Nyong’o.

“Hollywood insists there’s a certain way Africans should sound, and unfortunately, that doesn’t reflect the reality of West Africans like Nigerians or Ghanaians,” she said. “They want that East African tone, and they push our people to mimic it.”

According to Damasus, this creates a major hurdle for Nigerian actors, many of whom do not naturally speak with such accents. She also pointed out that most Nigerians who have landed lead roles in Hollywood productions were either born or raised abroad and already speak with British or American accents, making them more marketable to casting directors.

She shared her personal experience, revealing how she was once told by Hollywood insiders that she didn’t fit any “recognizable” category.

“They told me, ‘We want an African that’s very dark. That’s the image we’re familiar with. You’re not dark enough, and you’re not light enough to pass as mixed-race. Your accent isn’t African, American, or British—it’s hard to place you,’” she recalled.

Damasus challenged these perceptions, noting that Africa is a vast and diverse continent with a wide range of cultures, dialects, and accents.

“I asked them, ‘What do you think Africans sound like?’ Because in Africa, we have countless countries, and within each of those countries are different ethnic groups and accents. There’s no single African voice,” she said.

Her comments highlight the ongoing struggle for more authentic and inclusive representation of African identities in global film industries like Hollywood.
