The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has announced a series of rule changes ahead of the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

New measures have been introduced to speed up play and reduce time-wasting. Players being substituted must leave the pitch within 10 seconds or their replacement will be delayed by one minute. Throw-ins and goal kicks must now be taken within five seconds, or possession will be handed to the opposing team.

Players who receive treatment on the field will be required to step off and remain out for at least one minute before returning, unless the injury was caused by a foul that resulted in a card.

The use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been expanded to include reviews of second yellow cards leading to a red card, as well as incorrectly awarded corner kicks.

Only team captains will be allowed to approach referees for explanations. Any other players who crowd or challenge the referee will be shown a yellow card.
