Dr Congo’s human statue becomes AFCON’s unforgettable supporter

The Democratic Republic of Congo were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday, but Michel Kuka Mboladinga, the country’s “human statue,” became the tournament’s most unforgettable supporter

Dressed in bright, colorful attire, Kuka stands completely still during matches, gazing skyward with his right arm raised and palm open.

On Tuesday, he was joined by hundreds of Congolese fans, whose trip to Morocco was funded by the government, for the last-16 clash against Algeria, which the Leopards lost 1-0 in extra time.

Kuka’s pose pays homage to a statue of Patrice Lumumba, the nation’s independence leader and first prime minister, located in Kinshasa. Lumumba, assassinated in 1961 by a mix of Katanga separatists and Belgian mercenaries, remains a symbol of Congolese pride. His d3ath is one of the darkest chapters in the history of Belgium–Congo relations.

Fans at the Cup of Nations expressed pride in Kuka’s tribute. “He is our brother,” said 30-year-old Laetitia Malula in Casablanca before the Algeria match. “He chose to imitate Lumumba, our hero. That is why we chant his name.”

DR Congo’s participation comes amid ongoing conflict in the east near the Rwandan border, where fighting has flared since 2021 involving the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group.

Kuka avoided media attention during the tournament, but Jered Bitobo, 35, head of communications for Kuka’s supporters’ group, said the pose is “a sign of peace.”

“He is sending a strong message locally and internationally. The open palm represents peace, which our country desperately needs,” Bitobo said.

Kuka first adopted the pose years ago while attending matches for AS Vita Club, and it has since become his signature at every game.
