Argentina qualifies for World Cup final after defeating England

Defending champions Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday, booking their place in the World Cup final against Spain

England took the lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished off a cross from Morgan Rogers in a fiercely contested semifinal.

Argentina responded late in the match, with Enzo Fernández equalising in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home a stoppage-time winner to seal a dramatic comeback.

Lionel Messi, who is chasing a second consecutive World Cup title with Argentina, remains tied as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals. The 39-year-old is also one of only two players, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, to have featured in six men’s World Cups.

Argentina will face Spain in Sunday’s final after the Spaniards defeated France 2-0 in the other semifinal, while England will meet France in Saturday’s third-place playoff.
