Here are five players who could make the AFCON 2025 squad for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the tournament draws nearer.
As football fans actively gear up for AFCON 2025, scheduled to commence in December, eyebrows have been raised in regards to players expected to make the squad of different countries, one of which is Nigeria.
Following the recent update made by the official Super Eagles of Nigeria’s social media account, it is known that the first draft of the squad list, also known as the preliminary list, is set to be confirmed soon.
Ahead of the announcement, we have compiled a list of five players Eric Chelle could call up for the tournament that could come as a shock to many football fans in the country.
With Benjamin Fredrick expected to miss the tournament due to injury, Chelle will be forced to dig deep in search of his replacement in the team.
Who are the unexpected players who could make Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 squad?
Paul Onuachu: Onuachu’s strong club form this season makes him a much more compelling inclusion for Nigeria’s AFCON squad. While some might have previously viewed him as a static or niche option, his performances show that he can still dominate in attack. His aerial ability, physical presence, and finishing prowess have been key for his club, making him a genuine goal threat and a reliable outlet in the box.
Ahmed Musa: A surprise call-up, largely due to his age and the fact that he is no longer competing regularly at the highest level in Europe. Many believe his international career has run its course. Still, Chelle might view Musa as a valuable tournament player rather than a weekly starter. His experience in AFCON and World Cup campaigns, combined with his leadership qualities, could bring balance to a relatively young squad.
Ola Aina: Ola Aina, while not a shocking name on paper, would be an unexpected pick given the Nottingham Forest defender is slowly working his way back to fitness after an injury that sidelined him for a long period.
Terem Moffi: Terem Moffi would be viewed as a left-field attacking option because he is frequently overshadowed by Nigeria’s more high-profile strikers. Despite this, he brings qualities that fit a structured, hard-working team. His off-ball movement, pressing ability, and knack for finding space in crowded penalty areas could make him a useful piece in Chelle’s system. He is particularly suited to playing alongside another striker, which aligns with Chelle’s tendency to experiment with two-man forward lines.
Nathan Tella: Tella’s inclusion would surprise many because he hasn’t yet cemented himself as a guaranteed national team player. While he has shown flashes of quality at the club level, he remains inconsistent in the eyes of many fans. Chelle, however, could value his pace, directness, and defensive work rate. In high-intensity AFCON matches, wingers who can sprint in transition and also track back are crucial.
