South Africa’s Tyla wins Best African Music Performance at Grammy Awards, defeating Davido and other Nigerian nominees

The 68th Grammy Awards was held in Los Angeles in the early hours of Monday, February 2, 2026, celebrating the biggest music releases of the year across multiple genres.

Bad Bunny emerged as the biggest winner of the night, dominating the top general categories. His single DtMF won Record of the Year, while his album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS claimed Album of the Year, making him one of the few non-English language artists to win both prizes in the same night. The album had faced strong competition from projects by Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Tyler the Creator, Justin Bieber and Leon Thomas.

Song of the Year went to Lady Gaga for Abracadabra, a win that recognized songwriting rather than performance. The category included major contenders such as Anxiety by Doechii, Manchild by Sabrina Carpenter, Luther by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA, and Wildflower by Billie Eilish.
Best New Artist was awarded to British singer Olivia Dean, marking her first Grammy win. She beat out a diverse field of nominees including Leon Thomas, Lola Young, KATSEYE, Addison Rae and Alex Warren.

In the pop categories, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande won Best Pop Duo or Group Performance for Defying Gravity. Best Pop Vocal Album went to Lady Gaga for Mayhem, while Best Pop Solo Performance was claimed by Sabrina Carpenter for Manchild.

In dance and electronic music, FKA twigs won Best Dance or Electronic Album for EUSEXUA, while Tame Impala took Best Dance Recording for End of Summer. Rock music was led by Turnstile, who won Best Rock Album, while The Cure won Best Alternative Music Performance for Alone.

R and B saw Leon Thomas win Best R and B Album for Mutt, while Best R and B Performance went to SZA. In rap categories, Clipse featuring Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams won Best Rap Performance for Chains and Whips, while Best Rap Album was awarded to Kendrick Lamar for GNX.

Global music categories drew strong international attention, especially from Africa. The award for Best African Music Performance went to South African singer Tyla for Push 2 Start. The category included Nigerian nominees Burna Boy, Davido featuring Omah Lay, and Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid, but none secured the win. Tyla’s victory marked her second Grammy win and reinforced South Africa’s growing influence on the global pop and African music scene

In visual media categories, Doechii won Best Music Video for Anxiety. The award for Best Song Written for Visual Media went to Golden from the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, while the Sinners soundtrack won Best Compilation Soundtrack.

Special Merit Awards were also presented ahead of the main ceremony, with legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his lasting global influence on music and culture.

The 2026 Grammy Awards highlighted the continued globalization of popular music, with major wins across Latin, African, pop, rap and alternative genres. While Nigerian artists left without competitive wins, their strong presence among nominees underscored Africa’s growing role in shaping the sound of contemporary global music.
