Afrobeats artist Rotimi has shared the reasons behind his departure from 50 Cent’s record label, G-Unit Records.
In an interview, Rotimi revealed that the key reason for him leaving was the creative difference between him and the label.
At the time of his signing, Afrobeats was still a relatively unknown genre in the Western music scene.
Rotimi faced difficulties in promoting his music within the label, and his conversations with 50 Cent revealed a lack of understanding about Afrobeats.
Rotimi recalled a specific conversation with 50 Cent, where he mentioned his record “Love Rhythm” and its potential for success. However, 50 Cent’s lack of understanding about Afrobeats led Rotimi to realize that he needed to find a new platform that would support his creative vision.
Rotimi stated that 50 Cent ultimately let him out of his contract due to their creative differences.
The experience taught Rotimi the importance of finding a label that truly understands and supports his artistry.
“I have a record called ‘Love Rhythm’ and it’s going to blow up. But if you don’t understand what it is, then I have to go somewhere else.”
In a recent interview with Adesope Live, Rotimi stated, “I was signed to G-Unit, but then in 2017/2018, Afrobeats was not mainstream in the United States. Davido and Wizkid had records that were gaining traction in Boston, New York, but it wasn’t mainstream at that time.
“Afrobeats was big in the States, but they weren’t following it in LA. So, 50 Cent and I had a conversation. He was like, ‘What’s this sound you are trying to do?’ I said, ‘Bro, it’s Afrobeats.
“I have a record called ‘Love Rhythm’ and it’s going to blow up. But if you don’t understand what it is, then I have to go somewhere else.’ He let me out of my deal because we disagreed on the creative process, Afrobeats.”
