The charges filed against street-pop artist Portable have been dropped following a conversation between Fuji icon Saheed Osupa and activist Omoyele Sowore, who has strongly criticized the involvement of the Nigeria Police Force in the matter.
In a Facebook post, Sowore revealed that he had an extended discussion with Saheed Osupa, during which the musician acknowledged that involving the police could be perceived as an attempt to repress Portable, despite his initial intention to clear himself of any alleged threats against the singer.
According to him, Osupa agreed to withdraw the charges—ranging from defamation to incitement—that led to Portable’s incarceration in a prison in Ilorin after he was unable to meet bail conditions.
Sowore used the opportunity to reiterate his call for a stop to the misuse of cybercrime laws in civil conflicts.
He concluded his post with the hashtags: #EgbetokunMustGo, #repealcybercrimeact, and #RevolutionNow.
He captioned: “Today, I had an extended discussion with King Saheed Osupa Akorede highlighting that the Nigeria Police Force has no rightvto crominaze civil disputes.
He explained that his use of the police was intended to show his non-involvement in any actions that could harm Portable, but acknowledged that his actions might be seen as using the police for repression.
s a result, he declared that he had dropped the charges against Portable, which had led to his incarceration at a prison in Ilorin due to his inability to fulfill bail requirements.
Our position remains unchanged: the Police should refrain from using Cybercrime charges against anyone in the future.
