A Nigerian lawyer, Owolabi Salis, has made history as the first from the country to travel to space.
Salis was part of Blue Origin’s NS-33 mission, which launched from West Texas on Sunday, June 29. The suborbital flight lasted approximately 10 minutes and reached an altitude of 105.2 kilometers, crossing the Kármán line—the internationally recognized boundary of space.
Other crew members on the flight included Carl Kuehner, Jim Sitkin, Leland Larson, Freddie Rescigno Jr., and Allie Kuehner.
Speaking ahead of the mission, Salis described the experience as more than just space travel, calling it a “spiritual journey” and a “call to inspire future generations.”
This milestone adds to his record-breaking achievements. Salis previously became the first Black African to travel to both the Arctic and Antarctic in the same season.
