Nigeria’s Super Falcons win 10th WAFCON Title

Nigeria has completed a stunning comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, clinching their record-extending 10th title.

Morocco looked destined for their first-ever WAFCON crown after an impressive first half that saw them take a 2-0 lead, with goals from captain Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy electrifying the home crowd.

Chebbak opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a thunderous strike from outside the box, before Mssoudy doubled the advantage in the 24th minute with a composed finish after a dazzling run into the area. The Atlas Lionesses dominated the half and appeared firmly in control heading into the break.

But Nigeria, ever resilient, returned from halftime with renewed energy and purpose. The turning point came in the 63rd minute when the Super Falcons were awarded a controversial penalty after the ball struck Nesryne El Chad’s arm. Esther Okoronkwo stepped up and converted calmly to give Nigeria hope.

Momentum shifted decisively in Nigeria’s favor. In the 71st minute, Okoronkwo turned provider, racing down the right flank and delivering a low cross for Folashade Ijamilusi to slot in the equalizer from close range.

Morocco thought they had a chance to reclaim the lead in the 79th minute when they were awarded a penalty for handball, but a lengthy VAR review overturned the decision — a moment that enraged the home fans and sparked controversy over the officiating.

With the tension at boiling point, Nigeria struck the decisive blow in the 88th minute. Jennifer Echegini pounced on a deep free-kick and nudged the ball into the net, completing a sensational comeback and securing the title.

Despite a spirited effort and a dream run to the final that included a dramatic semifinal shootout win over Ghana, Morocco fell just short. Nigeria’s road to glory included a hard-fought 2-1 win over defending champions South Africa in the semis.

The final was watched by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, underlining the global significance of the match and the growing stature of women’s football in Africa.

Nigeria’s triumph also comes with a $1 million prize, the largest in WAFCON history, part of a 45% prize pool increase by CAF for this year’s edition.

While heartbreak lingers for Morocco, their performance throughout the tournament has won admiration across the continent. For Nigeria, “Mission X” is complete — a 10th title, a thrilling final, and another reminder of their reign over African women’s football.
