Morocco claimed a historic third TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) title after edging debutants Madagascar 3-2 in a pulsating final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday
The Atlas Lions, winners in 2018 and 2020, faced a determined Malagasy side but ultimately relied on their experience and attacking prowess to secure victory. Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui stole the spotlight, scoring twice — including a stunning 40-yard strike — to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
The triumph earned Morocco not only the championship but also a $3.5 million prize, while Madagascar, who captured hearts with their remarkable run, settled for silver and $1.2 million.
The final delivered plenty of drama. Lamlaoui opened the scoring within 15 minutes following a precise pass from Youssef Mehri, only for Toky Rakotondraibe to level midway through the first half. Morocco regained the lead when Sabir Bougrine converted another assist from Mehri.
The second half produced the match’s standout moment: Lamlaoui’s audacious long-range strike that left goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa helpless and drew applause from the crowd. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa’s late goal set up a tense finish, but Morocco held on to secure their third CHAN crown in six years.
For Madagascar, the loss was bittersweet. In only their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final, leaving with pride and confidence for the future.
The 2024 edition, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, concluded on a high note, with Morocco reaffirming their position at the pinnacle of African football.
