Moroccan FA says its ready to host WAFCON after CAF ruling

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has affirmed its readiness to host a successful Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite ongoing controversy over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

The statement follows a contentious ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that awarded Morocco the AFCON 2025 title after overturning Senegal’s 1-0 victory in the January 18 final.

Senegal had staged a 17-minute walk-off in protest against a stoppage-time penalty given to Morocco, prompting CAF’s Appeals Committee to enforce Article 82 of its regulations, which states that any team leaving the field without the referee’s consent forfeits the match. The decision handed Morocco a 3-0 victory, marking their first AFCON title in 50 years.h

Senegal has rejected the ruling and confirmed its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In its Wednesday statement, the FRMF clarified that its focus is not to dispute the sporting merit of the final but to uphold the integrity and rules of African football.

“Following the initial decision, which the FRMF appealed, CAF has acknowledged that the rules, known to all and applicable to all, had not been respected,” the statement read.

The federation emphasized that it followed proper procedures, submitting arguments and participating in hearings, and expressed confidence that the ruling would provide a clear framework for handling similar situations in the future.

“The FRMF will continue to advocate with continental and international bodies for the fair application of the rules governing the competitions it participates in. It now intends to turn its attention towards upcoming sporting events, in particular the FIFA World Cup and the Women’s AFCON this summer,” the statement added.

The Moroccan FA also commended all participating nations, highlighting its commitment to fair play and the continued development of African football.
