Mohbad: Coroner court orders prosecution of Nurse

A Lagos coroner’s court has ordered the prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe for her alleged role in the death of singer, Mohbad.

Magistrate C.A. Shotobi, who led the inquest in Ikorodu, gave the ruling on Friday, concluding that Mohbad died from complications arising from injections administered by Ogedengbe—who was neither a registered nurse nor a licensed medical practitioner.

“The nurse, Mrs Feyisayo Ogedengbe, administered the injections that led to the singer’s death,” Shotobi said. “She was not a qualified nurse and the injections ought not to have been administered by her.

The court described her actions as unlawful and blamed regulatory lapses in the health sector for allowing unqualified individuals to operate unchecked.

The coroner also ordered an investigation into the police’s alleged failure to act on a petition Mohbad submitted before his death, calling it a potential case of official negligence.

Mohbad, a former Marlian Music signee, died on September 12, 2023, at age 27. In October, the Lagos State Police Command identified Ogedengbe as the prime suspect. The command said she administered tetanus toxoid, paracetamol, and Ceftriaxone at the singer’s Lekki home, after which he reacted adversely—vomiting, convulsing, and later dying at the hospital.

“She administered the doses and went back home on the 12th, and he died hours later,” said Commissioner of Police Idowu Owohunwa.

In February, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommended Ogedengbe and Mohbad’s friend, Ayobami Sadiq—who invited her—be charged for recklessness and negligence under Section 251 of the Lagos State Criminal Law.

The DPP, however, cleared Naira Marley, show promoter Sam Larry, and singer Primeboy, stating they had no case to answer in connection with the death.

Following the coroner’s ruling, the DPP is expected to formally begin prosecution of the nurse.

Mohbad was initially buried on September 13, 2023, in Ikorodu, but his body was exhumed on September 21 for an autopsy. The result later came back inconclusive, according to the Lagos State Government.
