Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, bolstering the club’s goalkeeping department ahead of the new season.
The 30-year-old, who has 140 Premier League appearances under his belt, joins after loan spells with Real Madrid and Bournemouth.
A product of Athletic Bilbao’s academy, Kepa began his career in northern Spain, progressing through the ranks before making his name as one of La Liga’s top shot-stoppers. He also gained experience on loan with Ponferradina and Real Valladolid.
In August 2018, he became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he was part of the squads that won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Last season, Kepa returned to Spain with Real Madrid, playing a role in their Champions League and Spanish Super Cup triumphs. He then featured in 35 matches for Bournemouth across all competitions in the 2023/24 campaign.
Internationally, Kepa has made 13 senior appearances for Spain, debuting in a 5-0 win over Costa Rica in 2017. He was part of the squad that won the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
Speaking after signing his contract, Kepa said:
“I’m really, really happy to be here, really excited and looking forward to what is coming. The ambition that is shown in this club, when I talk with Mikel and Inaki, how much they show me their desire to win… I think we are so close to winning and, hopefully, altogether, we can achieve it.”
Sporting Director Andrea Berta added:
“Kepa is a player with great experience, someone who has already won major trophies. He brings a winning mentality and we’re excited to welcome him and his family to Arsenal.”
Manager Mikel Arteta also shared his enthusiasm:
“We’re very happy to bring Kepa in. He’s a player we know well and has consistently performed at the highest level. His hunger and experience will be a big asset to our squad.”
Kepa will wear the number 13 shirt and has already joined his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. His transfer remains subject to the completion of regulatory processes
Arsenal fans can now order Kepa’s shirt via Arsenal Direct.
