Maverick entertainer and activist Charly Boy has shared insights into his unusual friendship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as a relationship rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and a shared concern for Nigeria’s future
Known for his rebellious style and fearless critique of government, Charly Boy acknowledged on X that many Nigerians were initially puzzled by his closeness to Obasanjo.
“People wondered how someone who constantly challenges authority could be so connected to a former head of state,” he said. “But life is not always black and white. Sometimes respect and understanding build bridges where people least expect.”
Charly Boy explained that Obasanjo saw in him qualities often overlooked by others – courage, consistency, and a dedication to speaking the truth no matter the cost. In turn, Charly Boy said he recognized Obasanjo not just as a former military leader or president, but as an elder who had weathered war, the burdens of leadership, and the nation’s challenges with resilience.
Their bond, he stressed, is private and substantive, focused on Nigeria’s critical issues. Discussions between them may include debates and disagreements, but always with respect intact. “We may argue, we may disagree, but respect is always intact,” Charly Boy said.
A notable moment in their friendship came when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of Charly Boy’s autobiography, 999. The entertainer described the event as the most significant in his career, representing more than a book launch. “That day was not about selling books,” he recalled. “It was about acknowledgement. It was about an elder saying, ‘I see you.’”
Charly Boy believes their relationship demonstrates that even in a divided nation, bridges can be built. “When two strong men choose respect over ego, it becomes a powerful example for others,” he concluded.
