Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has sparked debate after suggesting that footballers who end up broke after retirement should be jailed
The 35-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from international football, shared his views on athlete welfare and financial discipline via his official X account.
Ideye urged players to start saving early, regardless of their income level, to avoid financial struggles after their careers end.
“Footballers, start saving for your future from day one. No matter how small your salary is, put something aside for your retirement,” he wrote.
When a follower commented that professional players, particularly those who played in Europe, have no excuse to be broke, Ideye doubled down on his stance.
“They should be jailed for life if, after they retire from playing, they can’t feed themselves,” he replied.
Ideye’s comments have drawn mixed reactions, with many debating whether financial mismanagement should attract such harsh criticism.
