In a heartfelt social media post on Thursday, September 26, former NBA MVP Derrick Rose announced his retirement from professional basketball, marking the end of a storied yet injury-plagued career.
“Thank you, My First Love…” Rose wrote on Instagram, addressing the sport that had defined his life. “You believed in me through the highs and lows, my constant when everything else seemed uncertain.” He reflected on how basketball had been his sanctuary, a space where he could express himself freely and overcome challenges, dedicating countless early mornings and late nights to perfecting his craft.
Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, quickly rose to stardom, winning Rookie of the Year honors and becoming the youngest MVP in league history at age 22 in 2011. Known for his electrifying athleticism and explosive play, he was one of the league’s most dynamic players during his time with the Chicago Bulls.
However, his career was marred by injuries, most notably a devastating ACL tear in the 2012 playoffs that altered the trajectory of his career. Despite battling through numerous setbacks, Rose had stints with teams including the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies. Now 35, Rose reflected on the experiences basketball gave him, both on and off the court. “You gave me a gift, our time together, one that I will cherish for the rest of my days,” he wrote, acknowledging that while it was time to say goodbye, the game would always remain a part of him. Rose’s announcement drew responses from fellow NBA stars like Kevin Durant and Isaiah Thomas, who praised his resilience and impact on the game. He retires with career averages of 17.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance and passion.
