Inter Milan have officially appointed former player Cristian Chivu as their new head coach, following Simone Inzaghi’s departure to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
Chivu, 44, signed a two-year deal with the Serie A giants, keeping him at the club until June 2027. A former Inter defender from 2007 to 2014, Chivu has maintained close ties with the club, previously coaching their Primavera (U19) side and leading them to a youth league title in 2022.
He most recently took charge of Parma in February 2025, where he successfully guided the team away from relegation. His swift impact at Parma, combined with his deep understanding of Inter’s philosophy, made him a standout candidate for the job.
Inter had initially pursued Como manager Cesc Fàbregas as Inzaghi’s replacement, but Como refused to release him. The club then turned to Chivu, favoring him over other shortlisted names like Patrick Vieira. Club sources cited Chivu’s familiarity with Inter’s back-three system and his tactical continuity as key reasons for the decision.
Chivu’s first major test as Inter boss will come later this month when he leads the team into the FIFA Club World Cup, with a debut match against Monterrey scheduled for June 17.
