Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti has been handed a one-year prison sentence by a Spanish court for tax fraud linked to image rights earnings during his time as Real Madrid manager in 2014
The 66-year-old Italian was also fined €386,361. However, under Spanish law, prison sentences under two years for first-time, non-violent offenders are typically suspended—meaning Ancelotti is not expected to serve jail time.
The verdict, delivered by a Madrid court on Wednesday, found Ancelotti guilty of failing to declare income from image rights during his first spell at Real Madrid, which lasted from 2013 to 2015.
During the trial, Ancelotti claimed he had no intention of committing fraud, reportedly stating that he “simply did as he was told by the club.”
The court dismissed similar charges related to 2015 after concluding that Ancelotti did not spend enough time in Spain that year to be liable for tax. He left the country after being sacked by Real Madrid in May 2015 and moved to London.
