Andre Onana in talks over permanent Man United exit

Andre Onana could be handed the opportunity to return to Inter Milan from Manchester United this summer after his agents held talks with the Serie A club.

The Cameroon goalkeeper’s representatives are in Milan this week to discuss a number of potential deals, and Daily Mail Sport understands that they have discussed the possibility of Onana moving back to the San Siro.

He is currently on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey after losing his place as United No1 to Senne Lammens when the Belgian moved from Royal Antwerp in September.

Although the 29-year-old has not given up on his Old Trafford career, he is expected to leave permanently at the end of the season, and is being discussed as a possible replacement for Yann Sommer at Inter.

Onana was hugely popular during his one season at Inter in 2022-23 when he helped the club reach the Champions League final – losing narrowly to Manchester City in Istanbul – as well as winning the Italian Cup and Super Cup.

It persuaded United to buy him for £47.2million, but they decided on a change of goalkeeper due to his inconsistent form over two seasons.

Onana has thrived since moving to Turkey, losing just three of his 16 games on loan to put Trabzonspor in third place in the Super Lig table behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce at the halfway point of the season.

It has alerted Inter to the possibility of bringing him back to the San Siro as they consider replacing Sommer, who joined the Italians from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 when Onana left to join United.

It’s understood that Onana still owns a property in Milan, although wages could be a stumbling block. Onana was given a pay rise when he joined Trabzonspor from United once it became clear that he could not stay as back-up to Lammens.

The former Barcelona and Ajax keeper still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Old Trafford, so United may have to pay him off to enable any deal to go through.
